FAQ
Common questions about Nigerian Names.
What we collect, how the audio happens, why the gender vote exists, and how to contribute.
- Why don't all names have audio?
- We only publish audio recorded by native speakers: by the project owner, by invited Nigerian contributors, or by community submissions. If a name doesn't have audio yet, you'll see a Submit a pronunciation button on its page. Anyone can record and send one.
- How do you decide a name's tribe?
- Tribe is sourced from the name's language of origin in multiple references (Wikipedia, community sites, our curated CSV). When sources disagree we hold the name as draft until a human reviews it. Many Nigerian names cross tribal boundaries, and those are usually tagged with the most common origin.
- Is the gender label your editorial opinion?
- No. The gender on every name page is a community-perception vote. Anyone can cast one, and the bars reflect what visitors have collectively said. Many Nigerian names are genuinely unisex and the masculine / feminine split tells you something the dictionary can't.
- Can I record audio for my own name and have it published?
- Yes, that's exactly the point. Head to the contribute page and pick “Submit a pronunciation”. We credit every contributor on the name page.
- I found a meaning that's wrong. What do I do?
- Send a correction via the contribute page, pick “Suggest a correction”, paste the name slug, and tell us what should change and why. We review every submission and update sources if we accept the change.
- Why does the search find my name when I type without accents?
- Every entry has a diacritic-stripped form indexed for search. Ayo finds Àyọ́ even though the display preserves the original tones.
- Are the famous people listed Nigerian Names' opinion of who's famous?
- No. The famous-people roster is auto-pulled from Wikidata. Every person listed is a Nigerian citizen who has a Wikipedia article and whose first name matches. Clicking any person opens their Wikipedia page so you can read about them in full context.
- Can I use this data for my app / research / book?
- Audio recordings are licensed individually per contributor and you should ask. Meaning, phonetic, and tribe data may be reused with attribution to nigeriannames.com and a link back to the name's page. For commercial reuse or bulk export, get in touch.
